In this case, the ACLU represented Carolyn Bobb, a bankruptcy lawyer who, on January 26, 1982, was held in contempt of court during voir dire questioning (preliminary questioning of a witness or juror by a judge) by a trial judge for jury duty. Bobb refused to answer questions about whether or not she had a husband, arguing that such a line of questioning was sexist, since male jurors were not asked the same questions.
