Scope and Contents

Comprises scattered issues of early California newspapers with the bulk published in San Francisco. The collection comprises mostly single issues, with the bulk covering the years 1860 to 1900. A portion of the newspapers are foreign language papers reflecting the diversity of San Francisco at that time. They include Serbian, Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Hebrew, and Spanish-language papers. Collection also includes two 1870 issues of the Brooklyn Independent, published in Brooklyn, California, a former city in Alameda County that was annexed to Oakland in 1872. Also includes two single issues from newspapers published in Nevada.

Biographical / Historical

Former California Historical Society president and printing historian, George L. Harding, founded the Kemble Collection on Western Printing and Publishing in 1964. It is named after pioneer California printer and publisher Edward Cleveland Kemble. This collection of single issue newspapers was collected by Harding and donated to the California Historical Society.

Comprises scattered issues of early California newspapers with the bulk published in San Francisco from the 1960s to the early 1900s. The collection includes newspapers in Spanish, German, Serbian, French, German, Japanese, Hebrew, and Chinese.

Arrangement

The newspapers are arranged alphabetically by title, except for the foreign language newspapers and the Nevada newspapers.
