Content Description
Contains 15 black and white cartes de visite picturing Modoc Indians who took part in the Modoc War of 1872-1873. Portraits taken by Louis Herman Heller after their capture by Captain C.B. Throckmorton. Includes portraits of Captain Jack and his family, Schonchin, Steamboat Frank, Hook Jim, Donald McKay (posed with Captain Jack's capturers), Shacknasty Jim, Scar-Faced Charley, Black Jim, Bogus Charley, Ike, Boston Charley, and Curly-Headed Doctor. Includes a group portrait with a Caucasian man identified as Fairfield. Each mount is printed at bottom: I certify that L. Heller has this day taken the photographs of the above Modoc Indian prisoner under my charge. Capt. C.B. Throckmorton, 4th U.S. Artillery, Officer of the Day. I am cognizant of the above fact. Gen.
