Patti J. Walters photographs of San Francisco

Content Description

Comprises 81 digital image files (76 JPEGs and 5 TIFFs) of San Francisco street photography, digitized by the photographer from 35mm negatives. A majority of the photographs were taken in downtown San Francisco: Market Street, Union Square, and Portsmouth Square. Other photos were taken at Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, and one at Playland. According to the photographer, the original black and white photographs were taken with a Nikkormat camera using a mix of Tri-X and Plus-X 35mm film, and the digital files were produced by scanning the negatives at either 3200 or 1200 dpi, along with some digital cropping and retouching.

Biographical Note

Patti Walters was the founding director of the Architectural Design Program at Stanford University. For three decades Ms. Walters taught courses in architecture at Stanford. Her teaching focus included: Architectural Design, Architectural History, Urban Studies, and Drawing. She also taught for one year at the École Nationale Des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris.

Patti Walters received her Masters of Architecture degree from UCLA. Her undergraduate studies included two years at the School of Design, Art, and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame, Indiana. Her master’s thesis included an extensive analysis of urban public space, and her undergraduate thesis merged art and architecture.

Ms. Walters is currently retired and works as an artist. She spent one year at the etching studio: Atelier 63 in Paris. She also studied lithography, watercolor, and painting in France and Italy, and traditional woodblock printing in Japan. She won a California Grant in the Arts, and has exhibited drawings, etchings, and photographs in various galleries.
