Scope and Contents
Business records comprise correspondence, account books, bills and receipts, legal documents, and other records relating to the various and extensive business dealings of the Burr-Allyne family, especially Ephraim Willard Burr (E. W. Burr), John Allyne, and Edmund Coffin Burr (E. C. Burr), from the 1840s to the 1920s. E. W. Burr’s business records (1844-1910) include account books, receipts, tax bills and other papers documenting the ship Henry Tuke (1849), the San Francisco firm Burr, Mattoon and Company, and the Savings and Loan Society. Also included are real estate and other papers for Mariposa, Monterey and Placer counties related to E. W. Burr’s speculation in mining; and real estate papers related to his property holdings in Alameda, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties, including records documenting the sale of Joaquin Pina’s land grant at Pacific and Powell Streets in San Francisco. John Allyne’s business records (1863-1942) consist of receipts, account records, correspondence, and a scrapbook related to his business ventures Allyne and White and Pacific Oil and Kerosene Works. E. C. Burr's business records (1887-1959) include account books, legal documents, and other papers related to his property holdings in Alameda, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties; and his business ventures, including the Monterey County mining company, Stone Canon Company, and the Alameda Sugar Company. This series also contains the articles of incorporation, by-laws, stock journal, real estate papers, and property tax receipts related to Baden Company (1902-1926), a real estate development and property management company E. C. Burr founded with Clarence C. Burr, Lucy B. Holman, and Mary Allyne.
